Major Arcana

The most powerful cards of the Tarot are the Major Arcana, also known as the Trumps. These cards signify powerful spiritual and life changes and the more that appear in a Tarot reading, the more likely that there are forces at work beyond your control and that you should seek for the lessons within.

Standard tarot deck consists of 78 cards, divided into minor and major arcana.
Meaning of the word arcana itself is “profound secret”. So, the deck of tarot cards is collection of secrets, waiting to be revealed to the reader.
To alchemists, these secrets are secrets of nature, and if unlocked, they explain the universe.
Major arcana is the heart of the deck. Each of the 22 cards represents some archetypical aspect of human experience, patterns of influence that are inherent and unavoidable part of our nature.
Many see the major arcana cards as milestones on every individual’s journey of inner growth and self realization. Some like to call it: a Fool’s Journey.
It seems that our lives are learning adventures, moving smoothly from one order of experience to the next. But the road from one milestone to another is often one big mess. We make mistakes, fail to realize our potential, skip important life lessons, and lack the courage to look deep in to ourselves, or the insight to discover deepest levels of who we are.
Often we experience milestones out of order. A person might develop and absorb qualities of Strength early in life, due to difficult childhood. Only to learn about love, relationships and sexuality later in life trough lesson of Lovers.
Many times we fail repeatedly to overcome our difficulties, until we learn the lesson of the Hanged man.
Lesson to let go and surrender to the experience is one of the hardest ones, and many have to face the same ordeal over and over to master it.
Our roads are full of detours, restarts, backups and traps. Our specific paths are unique but milestones are universal.
22 major arcana cards are markers on our path from earliest awareness (card 0) to integration and fulfillment (card21).
When one of major arcana cards appears in the reading, it gives it a special weight. It means that issue at hand is not mundane or temporary. These cards in the reading represent the seeker’s major concerns, feelings and motivations.
